Thermal Energy Storage (TES) Savings Tool IID, Imperial, CA

Situation

Imperial Irrigation District (IID) is among the largest public utilities in California serving the Imperial and Coachella valley areas in the southeastern part of California. IID requested Lincus to develop a permanent load shift program to reduce its summer peaking load. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) was explored as one of the strategies within this program.

Solution

Lincus developed a customized, interactive excel based engineering tool to analyze the installation of TES in 3 different, predominant market sectors (office, retail and restaurants) within the IID territory. The software tool had the following capabilities as well:

  • Capability to analyze TES installations in packaged (Ice Bear) and chilled water (CALMAC) HVAC systems.
  • Capability to select default load shapes for the different market sectors or input the hourly kW values (if known to the user) consumed by the baseline HVAC.
  • Analyze and estimate the energy, peak kW, and cost saved during each time periods (on-peak, mid peak and off peak) by installing TES units. Benefit to Cost analysis for these investments could also be performed using five built in TOU rate structures that the user can select from.
  • In addition to these five TOU rate structures, the tool can also be used to develop and design a custom defined TOU rate structure to simulate various customer conditions and predict the possible energy, cost savings and incentives.

Apart from the energy and demand cost savings for the customer, the tool is also equipped with outputting the utility incentive (in $/kW) to force a 5, 7 and 12 year payback periods.
